Hamad Airport, Doha
Hamad International Airport (HIA) was originally slated to replace the old Doha International Airport as Qatar's only international airport in 2009. It was scheduled again to open on April 1, 2013 before some security related issues made another delay.
The HIA would be able to handle a whopping 93 million passengers annually and would be among the largest airports in the World and only the second largest capacity holder in the Middle East (after Dubai). The airport would also be able to handle 320,000 aircraft movements and 2 million tonnes of cargo annually. This massive handling capacity is used to support the passengers growth; as well as for the spike on tourism football expected at the 2022 FIFA World cup.
The terminal is designed with wave styled roods and desert plants growing in recycled water. With half of the terminal is constructed on a reclaimed land, according data from HOK, the firm who designed the airport, HIA is in a 6.46 million sq. ft. / 600,000 sq. m area, equipped with 41 contact gates and 20 remote-stand gates.
